Short summary of LLW disposal project and NORM guidelines in Japan

In the Asian Nuclear Cooperation Forum (FNCA) newsletter, the mechanism for disposal of low-level radioactive waste generated from nuclear research facilities and facilities using RI was briefly explained. The outline of domestic guidelines on the handling of NORM was also explained, which has been the theme of FNCA since last year.

A Comparative study on effect of continuous radon inhalation on several-time acute alcohol-induced oxidative damages of liver and brain in mouse

We examined the effect of continuous radon inhalation on acute alcohol-induced oxidative damage of mouse liver and brain. Assay of antioxidative functions indicated that lipid peroxide levels in both the liver and brain of the alcohol-treated mice were significantly higher than those of the saline-treated mice. However, the lipid peroxide level in the liver, but not in the brain, of alcohol-treated mice was significantly decreased by radon inhalation whereas that in the brain of saline-treated mice, but not in the liver of saline-treated mice, was significantly increased by radon inhalation. These findings suggest that radon inhalation inhibits alcohol-induced oxidative damage of liver due to activation of antioxidative functions and that radon inhalation exert only a week effect on the brains in comparing with the livers. They further suggest that alcohol administration protects against oxidative damage of the brain that is induced by radon inhalation.

Development of new treatment process for low level liquid waste at Tokai reprocessing plant

The Low-radioactive Waste Treatment Facility (LWTF), which aims to provide the safe, efficient and economic treatment and disposal of Low-level Liquid Waste (LLW) generated from LWR spent fuel reprocessing, was constructed at the Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP), and a cold test is now being carried out. New treatment processes such as a removal process for radio-nuclides and the ROBE (BORSAURE EINENGUNG ANLAGE) solidification process are being implemented in the LWTF. In order to treat the large amount of sodium nitrate contained in the concentrated LLW with higher safety and economy, R&D work on nitrate-ion decomposition technology using a catalytic reduction method and on the solidification process by cementation is being undertaken. The results of this R&D will be adopted in the LWTF in the near future. This report describes an outline of liquid waste treatment in the LWTF and new treatment technologies for LLW to achieve safe, efficient and economic treatment and disposal.
